While its significance as an aspect of garden design is often ignored, fencing is an integral part of both the appearance and useability of your garden. Garden fencing is likely to differ between the front and rear of properties, with taller and more substantial wood fencing usually being placed in the rear garden, while the front of the home usually features more compact and more attractive fencing. Fencing for the front of the home tends to feature a low height and large spaces between the wooden slats. Additionally, it is often coloured to improve its decorative effect.
Fencing in the back garden is often used for privacy and to protect the boundaries of a garden, as well as to keep domestic pets or other small animals or wildlife either in or out. Due to this, these types of fences are roughly 6 feet high and use wooden slats without gaps in between. Due to the increased height, these fences typically have concrete footings laid in between each panel to provide strength and prevent the fence from blowing over or being ruined in poor weather.
Garden fencing panels are generally made of wood. The posts in between the sections are produced from either timber, stone, or concrete. Recently, fence panels have started to be made of heavily recycled and environmentally friendly composite materials such as recycled bamboo.

Aldgate is an area in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and partly the City of London. It was the eastern-most gateway via the London Wall leading from the City of London to Whitechapel as well as the East End of London. It gave its name to a City ward bounded by White Kennet Street within the north and Crutched Friars in the south.
The district’s name was initially recorded in 1052 as ‘East gate’, but became Alegate by 1108. During the 16th century, John Stow derived the name from ‘Old Gate’. But Henry Harben, writing in 1918, stated that this was incorrect and that documents show an alternative variation written prior to 1486-7. Other meanings include ‘Ale Gate’, linked to an ale-house or ‘All Gate’, which means the gate was free to all.
It’s thought that the gate at Aldgate spanned the road to Colchester in the Roman period, when London Wall was built. The gateway stood in the corner of the modern day Duke’s palace on the east side of the city. It was rebuilt in between 1108 and 1147, and once more in 1215. It was reconstructed completely between 1607 and 1609 in a more classical style. Like the other London gates, Aldgate was chained in 1377 on account of concerns about attacks from the French. The gate was finally removed in 1761 and temporarily re-erected in Bethnal Green.
