Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town situated 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided between the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided among two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a small stream generally known as Leadmill Gill, is inside the civil parish of Scotton. It’s the biggest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13000 and measuring more than 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a temporary camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with around 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is expected to develop to over 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre within the local area.
